A children’s assessment process will begin with a detailed phone conversation with the child’s parents or caregivers.
During this call, the Occupational Therapist will explore a child’s sensory processing ability in the home environment, alongside functional daily living tasks, including dressing, sleeping, mealtimes, grooming etc.
An initial assessment will then be completed in the referrer’s chosen environment. This could be in the home, clinic, or at school. During this assessment, the Occupational Therapist will complete a range of standardised and informal assessments alongside discussions with staff involved in their child’s care. This way, we acquire a holistic view of the child.
All information gathered will then be interpreted and translated into a thorough report with strategies to meet needs and recommendations for ongoing intervention.
A 1:1 session where you can come to the office (L14) or access via TEAMS and have an hour asking an Occupational Therapist any questions that you might have. You may bring your child along to this session should you wish.
Please note: No formal documentation is given following this session, however the Occupational Therapist may make recommendations for resources, provision or for a further assessment.
This assessment lasts up to 1 hour and aims to identify sensory processing challenges and provide targeted recommendations to support.
It includes observations of your child within a given setting (home, L14 clinic base or educational setting) and the completion of the Sensory Processing Measure-2 (SPM-2) to assess sensory responses. This will be followed by a short sensory profile style report with recommendations on how to support their individual sensory needs which will be provided to the referrer within 15 working days of the assessment taking place.
Following the assessment, a 30-minute virtual feedback session is available to discuss the findings and recommendations with the therapist.
This assessment lasts up to 1 hour and is designed to identify praxis, fine and gross motor coordination and functional skills. The assessment includes provision of the Movement Assessment Battery for Children (third edition) (MABC-3) assessment, a widely used tool to assess motor skills and coordination which is standardised for ages 3 –25. Further assessments to identify any challenges with ideation may also be completed depending on need.
Following on from the assessment, a motor skills style report will be provided to the referrer within 15 working days of the assessment. This will provide an overview of any motor difficulties, which will be broken down into manual dexterity skills, ball skills and balance and locomotion skills followed by recommendations for further support or intervention if needed. Following the assessment, a 30-minute virtual feedback session is available to discuss the findings and recommendations with the therapist. The assessment can be completed in either the home, L14 clinic base or educational setting.

This assessment lasts up to 1 hour and focuses, specifically on handwriting.
It will include both standardised and non-standardised assessments, such as the D.A.S.H. (Detailed Assessment of Speed of Handwriting) and Beery Buktenika developmental test of visual motor integration.
Various handwriting aids and equipment will be trialed to inform therapy outcomes. The handwriting assessment can also be conducted within the home or educational setting.
Please note: No sensory processing assessments will be included in this package.
You will be matched with an Occupational Therapist based on the needs of the individual being referred and the specialism of the OT. The allocated OT will complete both standard and non-standardised assessments to establish baseline functioning in relation to self-care; functional skills including both fine and gross motor skills, as well as sensory processing.
